I want to share…
Why am I blogging? Because I want to share my trials and tribulations of my drastic career change while I’m just beginning my “Autumn” years. I know, crazy, right?! I’m 52 years old, I’ve been in my profession for over 30 years. It’s a job I enjoy doing with my husband. I get to travel the US and get paid for it! And, I know the job inside and out! What better job, besides being an airline steward or pilot, right?
the trucking industry isn’t what it used to be. I’m getting burned out by it. I think hubby is to, he’s just not saying anything. First of all, the pay isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. We are in an industry in which the pay hasn’t changed in over 25 years. The pay rate is the same as when my husband drove close to 30 years ago when our son was 2, he’s now 29. We work 70 hours in 8 days, and usually after 6-7 days we have worked those 70 hours. After we work those 70 hrs, we’ll take a 24 hr break in our truck and start over again. This is our life for 6-8 weeks then we come home for 5 days, then do it all again.
We live in a space no bigger than a closet for 6-8 weeks, HELLO!! We deal with bad and dangerous drivers constantly. And they are in abundance in every state. I won’t even get into dealing with bad roads and weather! Hey Indiana, I’m talking to you! And last, but not least, it really is a thankless job. I’m tired of it.
So, What Career Are You Changing To You Ask?
I have been off of the truck for almost a year this coming April due to needing new knees and a new shoulder. Arthritis is a bummer, and more so when you’re a truck driver! A few years ago my husband got me a nice camera for Christmas. That was all I needed to fall in love with photography. I enjoy the challenge of getting the lighting right, getting the composition right and getting the camera in focus (that’s a big one). Since I’ve been home, I’ve really been getting deeper into this rabbit hole called photography. I know I can make a difference in other people’s lives. Making others feel beautiful about themselves is the ultimate satisfaction!
Maybe You’re in The Same Boat…
Maybe you’re in the same boat and want to change careers, but don’t know how to do it. If that’s the case I might be able to give you some insight by sharing what I’m doing. Or, maybe you’ve already done this, and can give me some pointers on what to do or not do. I just want to share this life change with others. Maybe we can learn from each other and make this transition happen more smoothly. What ever the case may be, I’m just glad I have someone to share it with. Hold on to your seat belts, because I have the steering wheel and the route guidance system is broken!
Until next time, Enjoy life, Enjoy the Day and take lots of photos for the memories!
